The Sacramento Sheriff's Department investigated the complex, located at 2226 Edison Avenue near Howe Avenue, Thursday afternoon after an employee contacted them about a strange chemical odor.

Authorities initially suspected the chemical odor's source could be a meth lab operating inside an apartment unit. Because its resident was out of town, deputies obtained a search warrant to enter the apartment .

Inside the apartment, deputies found two "volatile chemical compounds" in a container that they say needed to be destroyed. As a precaution, the apartment complex was evacuated and 1,700 nearby residents were notified to remain in their homes.

Sacramento is a top 10 destination city

Sacramento is a top 10 destination city

Sacramento is a destination city? It seems so, according to U-Haul.

Sacramento made this year's cut – rising three spots from last year to be named the 10th U.S. destination city.

The rankings reflect the top 10 destinations of U-Haul one-way rentals for the previous year. There are several reasons for the growth.

The survey credits the area's "green living" initiatives, as well as affordable regional home prices compared to coastal cities.

Another reason, Sacramento's growing entertainment hub with the new downtown arena well on its way.

"We're really stoked," said new Sacramento resident Whitney Dufresne, who moved to an east Sacramento home on Thursday. "Living near a great park within walking distance to a lot of neat restaurants and things to do is exciting for sure."

Responding officers have learned the victim, who is in her early 20s, who shot while walking with a man. Bowman said investigators have heard she was caught in crossfire between the occupants of what was possibly an SUV and a group of people in the apartment complex parking lot.

Bowman said the victim had life-threatening injuries but was expected to survive.

Detectives make arrest in shooting turned fatal in Arden Arcade

A Carmichael man has been arrested for a fatal shooting at an Arden Arcade bar lounge last Sunday.

Isaac Leo Rivera, 22, was taken into custody in connection to the death of James A. Watkins, Sgt. Lisa Bowman with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said.

Watkins died Wednesday. He was transported to an area hospital after being shot outside of the lounge in the 3400 block of El Camino Avenue.

Bowman said it appeared Rivera and Watkins did not know each other. There was a fight inside of the lounge which was continued outside into the parking lot where Watkins was shot.

Rivera was booked into Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of murder. He is ineligible for bail. Bowman said his first court appearance was scheduled for May 11.
