The Chickens of Sacramento Valley & A Giveaway!

The Chickens of Sacramento Valley & A Giveaway!

One thing I find most gardeners love? Animals ... cats, dogs, goats, squirrels, ferrets, bunnies, birds. But, while we love our dogs and cats, it seems the chicken is the up and coming fancy pet of the urban gardener!

Volunteers needed to Transform Grant High: July 24-27

Volunteers needed to Transform Grant High: July 24-27

The Sacramento Tree Foundation is looking for 250 volunteers during the week of July 24-27 to participate in their largest planting event of the year.

This summer, Grant High is undertaking a massive makeover. For years students have walked along the barren pathway that connects Grant High School main campus to the West Campus.  During warm months it's a sweltering trek and during wet months a long dash for shelter.  During the week of July 24th-27th all of that will change with a massive overhaul and planting party.

The project was conceived and planned by students from the GEO Environmental Science and Design Academy at Grant High School working in partnership with UC Davis Landscape Architecture students.  Their plan includes replacing asphalt with permeable pavement and installing vegetated bioswales to recharge groundwater and filter storm water run-off.
