Continuing a popular series of fun and interactive “Hands on History” activities offered each month, Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park (SHP) will present a special “Hands on History: Commerce at the Fort” event on Saturday, July 15, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sacramento Self-Help Housing, a charitable non-profit organization dedicated to the elimination of homelessness in our region, is proud to present the 15th Annual “Let Them Eat Cake” event in celebration of Bastille Day at Beatnik Studios (723 S Street in Sacramento) on Thursday evening, July 13, 2017, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Presented by Patrick Kennedy, Supervisor, District 2, and Sacramento City Councilmember Jay Schenirer, District 5, guests will indulge in a fun Bastille Day celebration showcasing outstanding local cuisine, wines, brews and beverages, cake tasting, upbeat music and more. Guests will enjoy listening to the sounds of the multi-talented musician Gabe Dixon along with bidding in a silent auction on artwork created by some of the region’s most talented artists and wines from leading local wineries including Boeger Winery and Illuminaire Winery.

The Midtown Association (MA) is pleased to announce exciting special activities happening in July – many designed to celebrate Sacratomato Week happening July 22 through July 30 – at the popular and thriving Midtown Farmers Market. Proudly sponsored by Sutter Health, the Midtown Farmers Market offers up to 90 farmer, grower and vendor booths bursting with fresh fruit, produce, and gourmet or locally made goods each week.  As a highlight, a crowd-favorite activity is an entertaining cooking demonstration on the first Saturday of each month presented by a talented Midtown chef and sponsored by University of the Pacific, Sacramento Campus. The year-round market takes place on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on 20th Street from J Street to Kayak Alley.*

Cigars were at the center of the 19th century’s fiery arguments over race, politics, jobs and agriculture. Hear about our own local tobacco industry, and early attempts at limiting smoking and spitting. And if you’re lucky, we’ll tell you about the spittoon convention! A center for culture, creativity and vibrancy, Midtown Sacramento is an exciting 2nd Saturday Art Walk destination where local art galleries and other participating businesses collaborate to host a popular evening open house each month. Midtown guests will enjoy viewing art exhibits, participating in hands-on activities, meeting local artists, sampling food and wine, listening to live music and more.  On Saturday, July 8, 2017, a sampling of the offerings presented by Midtown galleries and businesses include the following:

River Cats host 916 Night at Raley Field

Come show your community pride at the 2017 River Cats 916 Night! The event is on Friday, June 30th and it’s designed to bring together the community and celebrate.

The event falls on Orange Friday, where the stadium’s gates open two hours early so people can head to the Beer Garden for drink specials and live entertainment from a local band, as well as catch some batting practice. Orange Fridays include post-game fireworks, giveaways, and the team also sports their orange Sactown jerseys.

Elk Grove police make arrests in six suspected domestic violence cases, One Involved a Handgun

For the three day period ending Sunday, June 26, Elk Grove Police arrested six people suspected of domestic violence, including one incident that involved a handgun.
On Friday, June 23 police arrested Anthony Gipvoong, 20, and Alexander Navarro, 65, were arrested on suspicion of domestic violence. Also arrested that day was Salendra Singh, 55, who allegedly pushed two minor children in the presence of his victim. The victim in that incident was granted an emergency protective order.
On Saturday, June 24 three suspects were arrested on domestic violence charges including Elbert Arceo, 35; Michael Langford, 40; and Rakesh Rem, 49, all of Elk Grove. Arceo allegedly brandished a handgun at his victim during the incident.
